Gov’t approves plan to train legal experts

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on Wednesday gave the go ahead to a plan to train lawyers and legal experts to assist the country’s economic integration.

The blueprint is aimed at creating a group of international-standard Vietnamese lawyers and legal experts who are specialists in international law and practice.

Following the training, the experts are expected to provide consultancy on international economic integration, deal with international economic disputes, compile legal documents and lecture in law education.

Legal professionals from relevant Ministries and agencies, the People’s Supreme Court, the People’s Supreme Procuracy, law companies and businesses are eligible for the training.

Book exhibition on Ho Chi Minh opens

The National Politics Publishing House, in co-operation with the Fahasa Company, launched a book exhibition on President Ho Chi Minh yesterday in HCM City.

Of the 20,000 books on show, 181 are new titles.

The exhibition, which depicts the late Vietnamese leader’s life and work, has been organised to coincide with President Ho’s 118th birthday (May 19).

The exhibition, which lasts until May 22, is being held at the Nguyen Hue Bookshop.

More cases of foot-hand-mouth disease

The Hai Duong Province Preventive Medicine Centre said seven cases of foot-hand-mouth disease were discovered in different districts in the province last Wednesday.

Meanwhile, 22 cases were reported in Quang Ninh and Ninh Binh provinces.

Man arrested for smuggling bears

Mong Cai Town police have arrested a Chinese national for trafficking three live bears.

Police said the rare animals were being smuggled to China.

The bears are being looked after by officials from the provincial Forestry Department.

CFVG wins EPAS Accreditation

The French-Vietnamese Centre for Management Education (CFVG) announced yesterday that its MBA programme had received European Foundation for EFMD programme Accreditation system accreditation from the European Foundation for Management Development.

CFVG’s MBA programme is among 21 courses offered by 18 different institutions in 11 countries that have received this accreditation.

Founded in 1992, CFVG has trained more than 1,200 managers, policymakers and researchers in Viet Nam.

Ha Noi lake samples test negative for cholera

Recent water samples from 55 lakes in Ha Noi have all tested negative to the vibrio cholera bacteria.

The tests were conducted by the city’s Preventative Medicine Centre, as part of an ongoing move to control the sources of infection.

Quang Ninh police foil baby smuggling ring

Police in Mong Cai Township, with help from the local border guards, have arrested two Vietnamese women caught trying to smuggle a baby boy through the border gate to China.

Local police said Hoang Thi Hien and Truong Thi Loat, residents in Cao Bang Province and China’s Guangxi Province, intended to sell the baby to a Chinese family for 1,000 CNY (about US$143).

City ready to impose tricycle ban

The HCM City People’s Committee has sent a document requiring the director of the Transport and Public Works Department and leaders of relevant sectors to strictly implement the city’s decision to ban tricycles and non-standard vehicles from circulation.

The programme will be completed before June 30 this year. The city will provide VND40 billion (US$2.5 million) for the project rather than the more than VND700 billion ($43.7 million) proposed by the department.

Thousands waiting to learn to drive

Thousands of people who need driver’s licence in HCM City will have to wait from eight months to over a year before getting the opportunity to enter driver-training classes.

The problem has arisen due to the limited number of teachers available for training after recent Ministry of Transport stipulations requiring a certain ratio of teachers to trainees. Accordingly, many schools’ trainee numbers were cut by half.

Deputy director of the Viet Nam Road Administration Nguyen Van Quyen said his agency would propose that the ministry allow driver-training centres to employ tutors and increase the number of training cars.

City to crack down on sidewalk abuse

HCM City authorities will issue a decision on road and sidewalk use and management this month, which will designate certain areas for parking and help meet demand for the approximately 1,500 new motorbikes and cars registered every day.

Vice chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Huu Tin said local authorities would receive and intervene in cases where local residents reported social problems stemming from improper pavement usage.
