Vietnam and the US signed a repatriation deal Tuesday in Hanoi to guarantee and facilitate the “safe, effective and humanitarian return” of Vietnamese people who immigrated illegally to the US after July 12, 1995.

The deal was signed by the US Department of Homeland Security and the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after a decade’s negotiation between the US State Department and the Vietnamese government.

It is considered as a significant milestone in ushering in a new age of partnership and cooperation between the US and Vietnam.

Julie L. Myers, assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for US

Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said: “The deal shows the two countries’ commitment to approach each other and build suitable partnership mechanisms.

This is an important part of building a bilateral relationship.

The deal allows us to conduct the court’s decision to help citizens repatriate on the basis of safety and humanity.”
